Hydrogen

Hydrogen is fast becoming the fuel of the future and establishing a firm foothold within the Smart Grid arena.

Hydrogen can be produced by method of electrolysis, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electrical energy. If the electrical input is from renewable sources the carbon footprint of the resulting hydrogen is heavily reduced, effectively producing zero carbon fuel. The opposite can also be achieved with hydrogen, essentially reversing the process of electrolysis. Electricity can be generated by consuming hydrogen and oxygen in an electrochemical process more efficient than combustion.

The hydrogen component of the Eocisland project is probably the most significant thing to happen to road transport for the last century”

Motoring expert, Quentin Willson stops at The University of Nottingham to refuel the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell vehicle with green hydrogen, produced onsite by ITM Power. He then continues his journey to the Isle of Wight where he meets with Minister of State for Energy, John Hayes before addressing delegates at the EcoIslands Global Summit 2012.
